An Apollos Wannabe

Welcome to H. Warren Hoyt’s webpage! I call myself “An Apollos Wannabe.” Let me explain what that’s about.

A man named Apollos appears suddenly in Acts 18:24. He was a man from an intellectual capital (Alexandria, Egypt) who traveled around teaching what He knew about the scriptures and the God who inspired them. When he learned something new, he wanted to spread it around! And the Bible says he was mighty in the scriptures and eloquent, and he was able to help people grow in their faith. He was also able to refute the wrong ideas of Jews who rejected Jesus by debating them publicly.

From the first time I ever read about Apollos, I admired him, and wanted to be like him. I like to think that over the years, maybe I have developed some of his qualities and traits. So I’m “an Apollos wannabe”! Ultimately, it’s Jesus I want to emulate and follow, more than any ordinary human being. But maybe trying to emulate biblical characters you identify with is okay too, what do you think? I sure want to emulate Apollos’ knowledge of the scriptures, his eloquence, and his fervency to share what he was learning! I want to help those who have been saved by grace to better understand what they’ve received, and to better defend their Christian faith. I also seek to refute all other worldviews, religions, and cults that differ with the Christian worldview and biblical teaching. People need to know that Jesus and the Christian way is superior to all others! I hope you can at least agree with my ambition!

After pastoring a church on the west side of El Paso, Texas for ten years I felt it was time for me to resign and pursue God’s next assignment. We moved to the Gulf coast of Florida and I completed an online master of divinity degree from Regent University. Then I took on the pastorate of a church 20 miles away that had lost its pastor, and served there for a year and a half. I also began helping a small Hispanic church right up there street. I’m still at that Spanish-speaking church, but have left the English-speaking one. God works in mysterious ways! I’m not sure how long things will continue as they are. The world is changing so fast, and not all of the change is good. But one thing I am sure of is that I want to stay in touch with people I have ministered to over the years. I’m also sure that wherever I go and whatever I end up doing, I will not stop teaching and proclaiming the Word of God, evangelizing the lost and equipping believers. That will also involve constant study and wrestling with the issues of our modern society, in an endeavor to bring Christ’s message to the world in which we live.

For that reason, I want to continue posting teachings, sermons, and blogs here at this site. I hope to expand what I have here and offer seminars and even courses eventually.  By doing so, I can continue to teach the Word as I was when pastoring. For those who like something visual, I’ll do YouTube clips. For those who can better access a teaching while driving or jogging, I will do audio podcasts. I will also write here on the blog, because often a written meditation, argument, or teaching is quicker to access and can be more permanent, because the scriptures and thoughts are written down for you to print or access repeatedly.

My first videos were a series of teachings I did on KSCE TV in El Paso. In those videos, I presented some of the main points from a book by Drs. Norman Geisler and Frank Turek called, “I Don’t Have Enough Faith to be an Atheist.”  That is a terrific book I recommend to everybody. Since then, I’ve learned to create my own videos and podcasts, and I post at least one sermon video per week. I will also create teaching series and short topical messages in both Spanish and English.

I hope you’ll stay tuned for what’s to come on this website, and I hope you’ll feel free to share comments, questions, or any other feedback with me, either by commenting here on the website or by emailing me at hwarrenhoyt@gmail.com

Till next time, may God bless you all, and I look forward to hearing from you and interacting with you!
