The Immortality of the Soul?

I just turned in a paper for a theology class on the immortality of the soul. It's a bit technical, but if you can handle that, you might find it interesting. If you have any questions or comments, I'd love to hear 'em. Just scroll down to leave either a question or comment. The Immortality of the Soul

  1. That was very interesting. So then, if God were to withdraw his Spirit, all life would disappear… then we all must be born with His Spirit.. so is this different than the Spirit that comes when you are baptized by the Spirit???? Or maybe that is just an awakening or recognition of what has been within us all along???? hmmm

    1. Hi Roxanne,

Yeah, it’s different. I think Job is speaking about how God gave life and upholds all life, and if He were to withdraw, all life would cease. It’s Old Testament, and it’s about the Spirit just giving life. But in the New Testament, we have come into a different age. Because Jesus died and took away the barrier between us and God, we can now have the Spirit with us and in us in a greater dimension than in Job’s day. Non-Christians cannot have the Spirit. They have a spirit, their inner, immaterial person, but not the Holy Spirit. When we repent and ask Christ to come into our lives, He does come in, by His Spirit. Father, Son and Spirit come to dwell in us. And some people are baptized by the Spirit when that happens. Other people seem to receive a measure of God, but don’t allow Him to really fill their lives. Such people need to ask God to fill them, and they usually have a second experience, in which the Spirit just fills ’em up and overflows, and they speak in tongues and just experience more of Jesus. Hope that makes sense. Hope you guys have a safe trip too. If you have further questions, we can talk some time. Blessings, and thanks for reading the article! Warren

  2. Thanks for clarifying. It just makes sense the way you explain it. See you in the fall…

  3. 1. Is soul and spirit different?

    2. People often talk about Body, Soul, and Spirit. Do you think it has some link to the Trinity?

It is always intriguing to read your teaching.

    1. Hello Wen-Yee – glad to hear from you!

      1. Most theologians agree there is overlap in scripture regarding soul and spirit, so that it doesn’t seem they are different. They are just different words to describe the immaterial part of a person.
      2. There are two scriptures that mention three parts, body, soul, and spirit, instead of just two, soul and spirit. But I don’t think it is really linked to the Trinity. One way in which we are linked to the Trinity is that our spirit/soul dwells in our body the way the Word dwelt in a human body. It is inexplicable and miraculous, and nobody so far has been able to really understand how it works or what it really is like. The eternal, infinite, omnipresent God could dwell in one human body? Amazing! How did He limit Himself? How did the Incarnation really “work”?
So glad to hear from you again! Blessings, Warren

  4. Thanks, Pastor. So many things about God are Amazing and mysterious.

So, the fact that God “living” in us makes us immortal, right?
